Hip Hop Shakespeare - Storytelling, Theatre
& Creative Writing

In-school or afterschool residencies preferred. Minimum two-hour workshop. Appropriate for K-16 and adults. Through improvisations, movement and creative exercises students participate in an interactive theatrical workshop. In this fun class, rhythms, lyrics, poetry and song from popular recording artists of today and yesteryear are incorporated to illustrate classic Shakespeare plays and their themes. Students get a deeper insight and modern perspective into the classics. Concluding in a theatrical dance or performance poetry performance.

A description as printed by a school for a recent 12-weeks Hip-Hop and Shakespeare school class read as follows: "Marguerite Laurent, a recognized choreographer and dancer who knows many top Hip-Hop artist will, teach this exciting class in Hip-Hop, drawing from modern recording artist/poets' works such as Tupac Shakur, TLC, Angie Stone, India Arie, Rakim and great writers such as Maya angelou, Langston Hughes, Shakespeare and Tennessee Williams. The class combines music, theater improvisation, dance and Hip-Hop moves... After performing her original medley from these diverse classic and modern scribes - Laurent introduces her students to the process of creative writing."
