La Rencontre — Haitian & West African Dance

The Master Class
In this master class dance workshop, Marguerite Laurent teaches some of the basic steps of the traditional Haitian dances, their origin, meanings, colors and their place in Haitian Vodun culture and in the development of American dance and musical theater. You will learn to chant and sing their counterpart chants and songs. This is followed by across-the-floor work integrating more patterns of the selected dances and introducing at least two other different (Djouba, Kongo, Rabodaj, Nago, Mayi, Zepol, Ibo, Yanvalou ...) Haitian dances and rhythms. Participants will begin to learn the dances of the Haitian gods and goddesses, their symbolic meanings, the meaning (and true spelling) of "Vodun" and the phrase, "Lèmò, Lèmarasa e Lèmistè."

Artist residencies or a workshop after a Red, Black & Moonlight series or Haitian-West African (Clip one - Clip two) dance performance or a "To tell the Truth About Haiti Forum" are preferred
