Using Haitian literary history and its impact on U.S. history,
culture and ideology - from the American Revolution to the 1803
Louisiana Purchase to the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements
- participants will come away with a sense of the sacred arts
and culture of the Haitian people, including an authentic exposure
to the symbolic language of Vodun cosmology, vèvès,
flags and rituals. Uniquely designed creative writing exercises,
will introduce participants to Haiti's rich Afro-Caribbean literature;
its connection to the Vodun roots of New Orleans Jazz; modern
U.S. dance, Katherine Dunham Technique and the development of
American 'rock 'n Roll music. Great as a teacher-in-service or

science classes. This workshop integrating Haitian folktales,
myths, creative writing and drama is an exercise in generating
cohesion, connection, community, minimizing intolerance, increasing
teachers cultural competency and presenting an accurate picture
of contemporary Haiti and the contributions of Haitians and Haitians
of the Diaspora. |
