Overwhelming Majority in Democratic Elections
February 21, 2006
Excellence,
Once again the poor majority, the unemployed majority, the struggling
majority, the illiterate majority… Yes, once again this
majority used its
smarts and its insight to choose what it estimates good, rather
what it
estimates best in its quest for the necessary changes that will
ameliorate
life in its country: Haiti.
Those who have an easy life yet heard and understood the pleas
of the
majority and their struggle to ameliorate their lot, abobo for
their
solidarity? The majority encourages them to continue to offer
their example
of solidarity that balances things out, brings understanding,
harmony and the
possibility of peace, in a society.
I take advantage of this opportunity to thank you for your decision
to help
the majority stand in unity, no mater how fragile, to cross the
presidential
election threshold. Please, use all the wisdom necessary to maintain
the
unity, reinforce it, so that the nation can use every positive
force so that
Haitian people can become one with the land of Haiti, so that
slowly but
surely every Haitian’s lot can improve.
You are not a coup d’etat president… You are a president
with a mandate,
freely chosen by the people. I wish that all the other elected
officials,
running for all state office, will come out of the people’s
will.
The February 29, 2004 coup caused much turmoil in Haitian people’s
life. Well
before 2004, the coup d’etat forces started to wreak havoc
on and still today
they continue their rampage.
Coup d’etat empowered acts can’t be construed for
justice, they are
opposites… When the coup d’etat authorities enjoy
the complicity of some
superpowers, they decide that arbitrary acts are “coup d’etat
style justice”…
They transform justice into an improvised justice, on behalf of
one or the
other, or both of them simultaneously protecting their putschists’
interests.
Annette Auguste (Sò An), all of the political prisoners,
as well as myself,
we were not sent to jail by the judiciary. An unjust machine empowered
by a
coup d’etat perpetrated this criminal deed.
Therefore, the liberation of the political prisoners has nothing
to see with
justice… The coup d’etat authorities, Boniface Alexandre/Gerard
Latortue,
along with the putschists clan that keeps this regime in power,
they are the
ones who should release these political prisoners (This should
have been
done already)… Release them well before the majority chosen
government takes
the office of the presidency.
That is the type of decision, along with many more like it, that
would bring
hope to the Haitian people that justice can begin to take root,
grow strong
and last in the country.

Minister Yvon Neptune for His Brothers and Sisters of Fanmi Lavalas

My Brothers and Sisters of Fanmi
Lavalas,
I am investing the strength that I have today, though I have been
fasting for the past nine months in an attempt to force the de
facto government to release me along with all the other political
prisoners; I am investing my limited strength, reflecting on the
moment, sharing a few thoughts with on the elections that seemingly
will take place on February 7, 2006.
In spite of the fact that I have been jailed since February 29,
2004 and therefore have not been active in the affairs of the
Fanmi Lavalas Party, I stay informed, via radio news programs,
and understand how the majority of the Haitian people are debating
and analyzing the crisis crippling the country since February
29, 2004.
The defacto government, the forces that usurped power, along with
the gang of
putschists in the society, used allege problems they had with
President
Jean-Bertrand ARISTIDE, not only to spoil the five year tenure,
but also to
stage another coup; still, the most important objective of this
coup d’etat
machine was the dismemberment of the Fanmi Lavalas’ structure:
the
organization’s nucleus, its base consisting of the poor
majority, the
sympathizers in the middle and bourgeois class, as well as the
technical and
intellectual resources collaborating from within or without the
organization…
This annihilating mission, it continued after February 29, 2004,
till today,
a few days away from the elections that apparently will take place
on
February 7, 2006.
In this context, I hope that all the candidates will reflect and
analyze the
majority’s deeds, from the December 16, 1990 elections,
through the 1995
elections, to reach the 2000 elections. Such analysis would free
the
candidates of the limitations of the 2 year period of the de facto
Alexandre/Latortue Government, offer them a vision on the next
5 years,
taking into account all that influence life and land in Haiti,
and anticipate
when, how and in association with whom the needy majority will
set in motion,
once again, the organizational structures it started to establish
since
November 1996.
Without strong organizations, tirelessly working, the majority
will not be
guaranteed long-term participation in the defense and protection
of its own
interests as well as the country’s; that is, even if the
majority selects,
through elections, its representative at the helm of the state
apparatus.
The country’s political atmosphere, the pummeling absorbed
by the people, and
the reign of terror systematically putting organizers on the run,
forced the
people to use their intelligence and experience to avoid the perils
set by
others for it is a road to democracy truly paved with traps.
Starting from the December 16, 1990 elections, until the 2000
elections, full
and complete administration of elections have not yet taken place,
directly
or indirectly, to establish all the institutions that must be
established
through elections, according to the prescriptions of the March
29, 1987
constitution. Thus, Presidents, Legislators, Mayors are important,
but ASEK,
KASEK, Delegates and all other Assemblies and Councils, are indispensable
to
control, to development, to justice, to security for the population
throughout the country, from the communes all the way to the departments.
Without serious structures and permanent organizations controlled
by the
people, all these (incomplete) Institutions don’t offer
any adequate
guarantee to the defense and protection of the country and its
people’s
interests, as intended, no mater who takes power.
For 14 years, with one coup d’etat after another, taking
many shapes, they
tried to smother the vision/ideal of December 16, 1990, as far
as that
vision/ideal had to offer in terms of programs, projects, accomplishments,
hopes, to forever uproot exploitation, dictatorship and coup d’etats.
This
vision/ideal, it is that of the majority of Haitians, especially
the poor
majority, who decided to invest, consecrate their very lives and
selves to
establish a Haitian Nation where justice and security guarantees
lasting
peace for all Haitians living in Haiti.
We, who seek to become one with the Vision/Ideal
of December 16, 1990, we are
grateful to all those who denounced the February 29, 2004 Coup
d’etat; the
deaths and mourning brought by the de facto authorities throughout
the
population, most of all, in the neighborhoods where the poor majority
are so
desperately sacrificing to survive.
We, who continue to struggle in spite of the
suffering, the abuse; we resisting tyranny to live life in dignity,
in understanding and respect, remember:
“As the baker, we are constantly getting burned by the stove.
As the mother hen, only we know the pain of the egg.
The situation can’t continue like this in the country.
The only thanks we get is a good beating from time to time.
Sitting on our backs, they are happily rocking.
Before their eyes we are only working cows, tirelessly we pull
the carts.
We are the mat maker but we sleep on the hard floor.
